Player Spotlight: Seamus Nangle
Spotlighting Seamus Nangle’s fast start with the Dragons and his ambitions beyond the game
Last week we announced our new Annual Alumni Game series (which we announced back in December in our Newsletter and in our WhatsApp Community, but we want to make sure everyone sees it). If you'd like to play please fill out our form. Or if you'd like to donate please visit our donation page! Even £5 helps us to become more financially sustainable and helps us support the cost of an extra game!
Back to Seamus Nangle for our spotlight this week. As we mentioned last week, Seamus and Rohan have been best friends since they were children. Like Rohan, Seamus has been in London for only 5 months now and that’s about how long he’s been on the Dragons. Nangler the Dangler has another connection to the Dragons through Riley Ebbs, an absolute beauty, as they say, who played 3 season with the team (2021-2024) and now works at Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP. Ebbsy is actually how we got in contact with Seamus, a classic example of networking in action.
Seamus took no time at all becoming a standout defenseman on the team. In only 6 games, Seamus has accumulated 14 points, 3 goal and 11 assists. A great showing for a rookie defenseman. Nangle had a sweet dangle in our last game against Cambridge University to secure a lead and a 5-2 win over the Blues. Even better, Seamus doubled his point total in our last game against the Southampton Spitfire with 2 goals and 5 assists in our absolute barn burner of a game. And in our last game, another 4 assists!
You’re going to hear this a lot in our spotlights; it’s no surprise that Nangle quickly fit in on our team and has the experience to help us win games. He started playing when he was just six years old, again a trend that is common amongst our highest performing student athletes.
A note to our readers: one of the reasons we like to highlight that so many of our players started early on in their career is because we value youth development.
We don’t ever want to discount different pathways into hockey, and we always want to increase accessibility to the sport. We’re hoping to regrow our team to bring back our Beginners and Intermediate teams (and all those in-between)!
However, we do also want to emphasize and bring attention to the deep importance of youth development and accessibility every chance we get. It is vitally important to competition and growth of any sport to have healthy youth and junior’s programs and something we’re keen on improving as we grow. To do this, and to regrow our team to provide better accessibility to all, we need your help as volunteers or through your charitable donations!

Back to Seamus. Before joining us on the Dragons, Seamus played for St. Francis Xavier University (StFX), a small liberal arts university in Antigonish, Nova Scotia. A fun thing about writing these articles is that we find new leagues and routes that players have taken with every new player. Seamus played for the StFX Xavier Hockey League which is an internal competitive league, crazy to see a single university can have a whole league for itself.
A note to our readers: something we learned this year is that a number of leagues have stopped using the typical 20-minute period format. So, if you’re thinking about coming to the BUIHA, keep in mind that we play full 60-minute games.
During his time in the XHL, Nagle played for the Cameron Hall Cavaleirs where he scored 6 goals and dropped 4 apples for a 10-point season over 6 games. This performance put him in first for goals on his team and second for assists and led his team to a second place final in the 2024-2025 season.
Seamus, like a lot of current and former Dragons, took a break after high school hockey and, like the world, also missed a lot of hockey during the COVID period.
Before COVID, Seamus played in the Ottawa B Minor Hockey League (OBMHL), a league we see quite a few players from in the BUIHA. Nangle saw two seasons with the Ottawa West Golden Knights where he was a standout D-man. In his 2016 season he had 7 goals and 10 assists over 28 games. The Dragons always love having offensive defensemen on the team.
Even farther back, Samus played for the Ottawa Sting in Minor Peewee AA, Major Peewee AA and Minor Atom A. Nothing like a trip down memory lane to check out your Atom stats from 14 years ago.

Off the ice, Seamus is a real go getter and knows exactly what he wants to study and pursue. We see this a lot on the Dragons and our most competitive players often become our most successful players. Afterall, playing on a competitive team helps create a stronger sense of responsibility and necessity which translates perfectly to the workplace and education.
Nangle is currently studying for an LLB at Queen Mary University London where he has been involved with the Queen Mary Legal Advice Centre where he’s been working pro-bono delivering workshops for secondary school students across London. Part of his duties include educating students on the legal and ethical implications of sharing intimate images while also supporting client interviews and additional legal research.
A typical day for Seamus involves going to classes which are spread throughout the day, mixing in reading and assignments between lectures, then keeping in shape by hitting the gym at least 4 times a week, wow, so healthy!
And before his time at QMUL, Nangle studied a BBA with an Advanced Major in Finance and a Minor in Economics at StFX where he was very active with his internships and extracurriculars. In addition to hockey, Samus played on the StFX Men’s Rugby Team where he won the Alumni Shield Award for being a player who demonstrated leadership and commitment to his teammates. On the professional side, Nangle held two positions as a Financial Investment Analyst. His first position was with the Minto Group and Apartment REIT where he prepared a whole slew of financial models and forecasts. His second position was with Xaverian Capital where he was part of the student-led investment fund at St. Francis Xavier University. He helped manage over $750,000 in the Canadian Equities Market while also working on various forecasts, research, and sales. And lastly, to cap off his skills he was a College Pro Franchise Owner, no better way to start working your way up the ladder than literally climbing up the ladder.
To close out our Spotlight on Seamus we always like to ask, where next? For Seamus it’s pretty clear, he wants to stay and work in London, ideally something in Corporate Law like half of our team’s alumni. Nangle would love to chat with any of our alumni and other lawyers or legal professionals who are willing to provide guidance on what it takes to enter the job market with success. We’d like to help him reach his ultimate goal of someday retiring and becoming a chef in his old age!
